Dear DocNet Member,

We hope you are well!

Good news: On Wednesday, 27th of May, BAG announced to put through phase 3 of the gradual easing of measures. From 8th of June onwards gatherings of more than five persons are permitted again, and other restrictions are going to be lifted too. Therefore, we will be able to organise DocNet events again soon.

However, the still ongoing situation calls for careful consideration of what will be possible and what not. For this reason, we will restart with events that minimise the risks as much as possible. For example, many of the first events will be held at outside venues to guarantee that distancing is always possible.

To give you a quick overview of what events you can look forward to:
  • 30th & 31st of May: OneMillionRun
  • Starting from 9th of June: Our Running Team will start to meet again on Tuesdays at 7.00 pm in front of University Sports Hall. Joachim Stonig will gladly keep you informed in the Running Team WhatsApp group (please refer to our website).
  • 17th of June: DocNet Lunch @HSG-Mensa
  • 18th of June: DocNet Summer Drinks (outside)
  • 28th of June: DocHike - 5 Lakes Hike Pizol
  • 7th of July: Bodenseelauf - DocNet Running Team
  • 23rd of July: DocNet meets DAC (Doctoral Alumni Club) in Zurich
  • 4th of September: The DocNet Summer Party has been postponed to this date.
  • 20th of November 2020: 18th DocNet Symposium: “Thriving in Chaos – How to Master Adverse Situations”
We have promised to make up for the events we had to postpone once the situation normalizes. Our events team is working tirelessly towards this end. While some beloved favourites have already been cancelled, such as the Bregenzer Festspiele, we hope to be able to reschedule some of the missed events and to have an animated second half of the year. To stay up to date, please also refer to the events page on our website.

Information about precautions and current measures by BAG can be found here.

We are looking forward to seeing you at our upcoming events,

OneMillionRun - DocNet Running Team

Dear runners, the DocNet running team is back, starting from 9th of June! In the meantime, why not join us for the OneMillionRun remote running event this weekend? OneMillionRun’s goal is to cover 1 million kilometres within 48 hours throughout Switzerland and to raise money for young Swiss sports talents.
To be part of the official DocNet team for the event, simply register using the team name: “DocNet HSG” – let’s put up some of these kilometres!

How does it work?
Run as many kilometres as you want or can on 30/31 May, when and where you like, in compliance with the current BAG and cantonal health authorities rules.
The kilometres run are recorded either with the official tracking app, your own data tracker or by manual entry.
We look forward to running with you again!

DocNet Lunch in June

Join us and your fellow PhD colleagues for our monthly lunch meet-up! The hassle-free opportunity to get to know your fellow PhD students, exchange ideas, and to unwind for a moment while having lunch.

When & where: Wednesday, June 17th, 12.00pm @ HSG-Mensa

DocNet Summer Drinks

The waiting has come to an end and we are happy to announce that our famous DocDrinks are back on the 18 June 2020.
Join us at the beer garden of Netts Schützengarten to enjoy a refreshing beer or glass of wine, and get in touch with your PhD peers and new members. Early arrivers will be rewarded: The first couple of drinks are on us, so come by early.
As we have reserved some places (max. of 30 people), capacity is limited and signing up on Facebook is not sufficient. Instead we kindly ask you to register for the event on our website – first come first served.

DocHike - 5 Lakes Hike Pizol

It’s been a while since our last in-person event, but we haven’t been idle. As we feel that outdoor events are most prudent to start with, we are happy to invite you to hiking the five-lakes hike in the Pizol area with us. The hike itself is 4-5 hours, excluding the gondola ride from Wangs and back. It’s a proper hike, so make sure to bring adequate shoes (no flip-flops or sneakers), clothes, water and snacks to make it all the way. You’ll be rewarded by stunning views both over the Rhine-valley and Walensee. Also, there’s plenty of mountain huts where we can rest for a break and a well-deserved bite to eat.

We’ll meet at Pizolbahn valley station (Talstation) at 10:45 on 28 June 2020. There’s a train from SG main station at 9:25 to Sargans, and a bus from there to the gondola. The prices for the gondola (up and down) are 23 CHF with Halbtax or GA, 45 CHF without. Please register below so that we know whom to expect.
We look forward to gathering again and enjoying the mountains with you!

Bodensee Run - DocNet Running Team

To celebrate the return of team activities, we will also organize a run to Lake Constance on July 7. We run from the university sports hall to Steinach (Lake Constance); there we will have a well-deserved rest – and maybe a beer at Connys Hafenbeizli, corona situation permitting of course – before we are heading back to St. Gallen by bus. The length of the track is roughly 13.5km and is mostly going downward (there are 3-4 short upward passages).

We will start at 19:00 in front of the university sports hall. Pace will be roughly 6:00 minutes per kilometer, sort of an intermediate speed. On regular running team on Tuesday evenings, we will train for this run. Starting slowly and casually on June 9, we will increase our speed and distance every week to be fully prepared for the Bodenseelauf. Come join us for these workouts!
We would be delighted if you could join and spend a great run with us to Lake Constance and have a drink there-after. We hope that the weather will sunny, but we will keep you updated about our plans in case it is raining.

Save the Date - DocNet-DAC Get-Together in Zurich

Take the chance and join us at our DocNet meets DAC event which is a special edition of our DocDrinks. The DAC is the association for doctoral alumni from the HSG and together we host joint events annually to keep close ties. We are sure that the exchange with former doctoral students will be exciting and of course a lot of fun.

When? Thursday, 23.07., 8pm
Where? Zurich, the exact location will be announced soon

Save the Date - 18th DocNet Symposium

Thriving in chaos – how to master adverse situations. We live in a world of increasing globalization and digitalization, characterized by constant change and uncertainty. The recent pandemic has demonstrated just how fragile the global construct has become, inflicting chaos upon each and every one of us. One thing we know for certain: it is not the first time we witness such chaos and it definitely will not be the last. Therefore, the 18th DocNet Symposium will focus on the topic of thriving in such chaotic situations.

Please SAVE THE DATE: 20. November 2020!

This year again, you have the unique opportunity to participate in the selection of speakers. Tell us by e-mail ( which speakers you would like to hear at the Symposium. We are looking forward to many ideas and suggestions!

When & where: Friday, 20th November 2020, @ WBZ Holzweid
